Caster Semenya makes SA athletics history, winning the 400m‚ 800m and 1500m in one day

21 IconsMiddle-distance runner and 21 Icon Caster Semenya made South African athletics history at the Coetzenburg Stadium on Saturday when she became the first person to win the 400m‚ 800m and 1500m at a single South African Senior Athletics Championships – and in one day!

Semenya achieved an incredible triple as she won gold in the 400m and 800m‚ and did so with Olympic qualifying times in both of 50.74 seconds and 1:58.45 respectively. Her double here came with only 50 minutes rest between the two races. Semenya then added gold in the 1500m‚ beating Dominique Scott with a time of 4:10.93.

“I’m overwhelmed. I didn’t expect to run fast times like this. I had fun. You’ve got to enjoy what you do and that’s what I’ve been doing in this championship. I haven’t had fun in a while‚” she said.

Can you use CrossFit to train for the Comrades? Jonno Proudfoot takes up the challenge

The Real Meal RevolutionThe theme for the latest edition of Real Meal Radio is “Challenging Beliefs”.

Jonno Proudfoot, co-author of The Real Meal Revolution, is a guest on the show, and he reveals that he has taken up a running challenge ahead of the Comrades Marathon at the end of May.

The Comrades is one of the most famous ultramarathons in the world, approximately 89 km long.

Proudfoot says the challenge, dubbed “Breaking the Lore”, will involve him training using almost the opposite methods laid out by Noakes in his book The Lore of Running, which was published 30 years ago.

“We’re going to be following the CrossFit endurance training methodology,” Proudfoot reveals, “which is almost a third of the volume of running that most marathon runners train by.”

Real Meal Revolution Author Jonno Proudfoot Completes 458km Swim for Operation Smile

Real Meal RevolutionReal Meal Revolution co-author Jonno Proudfoot has completed a swim from Mozambique to Madagascar, to raise money and awareness for Operation Smile.

The low-fat, high carbohydrate diet expounded in Real Meal Revolution raises the body’s energy levels, according to Professor Tim Noakes and his co-authors, and it seems to be working for Proudfoot, as he and his swimming partner Thane Williams completed the 458km route in just 24 days, and raised enough money for surgery for 50 children with cleft lips or palates.

The duo faced numerous perils, including giant swells, jellyfish and sharks, and were even detained and questioned for seven hours on a French military base, after mistakenly venturing into international waters.

Proudfoot spoke to Sport24 about his experience:

One in every 750 children in Africa is born with a cleft palate or lip, and one in 10 babies born with this condition does not make it to their first birthday. [...] Operation Smile this week started its next mission in Madagascar, which will see over 300 patients screened for corrective surgery until mid-April. I sincerely hope that we are able to inspire people to help others live lives of confidence through our adventure in raising funds for the Cipla Miles for Smiles initiative.
